After completing your adventure, enjoy a convenient trolley or shuttle ride back to the Welcome Center—making this the most seamless and rewarding way to experience Ausable Chasm from start to finish.
Strap on a harness and explore the Family-Friendly Adventure Trail, a region of upper Ausable Chasm that is not accessible from any other trail. Crisscross over the raging river on this fully-guided, unique via ferrata that features cable bridges, a cargo net climb, and edge walks. A via ferrata is a protected climbing route characterized by a steel cable that runs along the rock, offering a unique and awe-inspiring journey through the chasm. If you've always wanted to experience rock climbing, but never actually learned to do it, our adventure trail is perfect for you. This activity is always a big hit with groups, even large ones.
Next, you'll step back in time as you walk our scenic nature trails in the midst of a primeval Adirondack Forest. Stroll past Rainbow Falls, Elephant's Head, Column Rock, Hyde's Cave and the eerie quiet of Mystic Gorge. Descend hundreds of feet to walk within the chasm on natural stone walkways and bridges to gaze upon eons of geologic history etched in stone. Our many bridges, stairs and vistas make this unique adventure possible. A truly breathtaking experience!
Lastly, you’ll board a raft and float through the narrowest and deepest region of Ausable Chasm. Experienced guides navigate the rafts between the towering cliffs of the Grand Flume, past the Broken Needle and around the Whirlpool Basin while discussing the geology and history of the chasm. The rapids found mid-way through the float tour are always a visitor favorite!
Once the float tour is complete, you can either take one of our trolleys back to the welcome center free of charge, or hike back on either the rim walk or dry chasm trail.
